Gaps Solitaire

Gaps Solitaire, also known as Spaces or Montana, is a unique and engaging solitaire card game that is easy to learn and enjoyable to play. The game uses a standard 52-card deck, and it begins by dealing all the cards, except the Aces, into four rows. The Aces are removed, creating four empty spaces, or "gaps," in the tableau. These gaps are central to the gameplay, as they allow players to rearrange the cards to form ordered sequences by suit. The primary objective of Gaps Solitaire is to organize all cards in each row in ascending order, from 2 to King, by suit.

Players move cards into these gaps by selecting a card and clicking on the gap they wish to fill. However, there are specific rules governing which cards can be moved. A card can only be placed in a gap if it is of the same suit and either one rank higher than the card to the left of the gap or one rank lower than the card to the right of the gap. For example, if the card to the left of a gap is a 5 of Hearts, only the 6 of Hearts can be moved into that space. This rule creates a puzzle-like dynamic, as players must carefully consider which moves will open up new possibilities for organizing the cards effectively. The challenge comes from managing the available gaps and ensuring that each move contributes to creating a complete sequence.

If players find themselves unable to make any more valid moves, Gaps Solitaire offers an additional feature to help progress the game. Players are allowed to shuffle all the cards that are not currently in order up to three times per game. This shuffle feature provides a valuable opportunity to rearrange the cards and create new potential moves, adding an element of chance that can help break a deadlock. However, players must use their shuffles wisely, as they are limited, and improper use can lead to an unwinnable situation. The game is won when all cards in each of the four rows are arranged in order, from 2 to King, by suit. Gaps Solitaire is a game of both strategy and adaptability, requiring players to think ahead and make the most of the available moves and shuffles. Its straightforward rules, combined with its depth of strategic possibilities, make Gaps Solitaire an enjoyable and satisfying solitaire variant for players of all skill levels.
